Hiking

Unfortunately, these days most of my "hiking" is done on a treadmill at my local gym, not very exciting - but at least I'm getting some exercise.

When I lived in Sligo I was a member of the Sligo Mountaineering Club and we used to hike the local hills at least once a month. I was never as fit as I would have liked, but I did enjoy myself despite the rain which was a regular feature of hikes in the west of Ireland. For a time I was even a member of the mountain rescue team, I think it was because I always carried my 2 meter handheld (amateur radio). Luckily, during my time in the rescue team we were never called out. I would hate to think that some poor soul would be relying on my level of fitness and technical expertise to get rescued....but anyway, I could at least be of some value for communication purposes. The team eventually got some commercial radio equipment and I felt that they would be better off without me.

Since I moved to the US I have done very little hiking, apart from a couple of days in Sequoia and a couple of days in Sycamore Canyon. My brother-in-law Sean, who was also a member of the Sligo club before moving to Los Angeles, is still an avid hiker. He has just returned from a hike up Mount Whitney. Sean has been trying to get me out on the local hills but unfortunately our schedules never match. Some day soon I will dust off my boots and venture into the hills. I promise....as soon as the weather gets cooler, as soon as I have time, as soon as.......
