My first love in motor sport has always been motorcycle road racing, the same format as found on the Isle of Man and at various venues throughout Ireland, this is pure road racing....using public roads that are closed for the duration of the race meeting. It is fast and dangerous, but very exciting to watch.

For four wheeled motorsport I like Irish Tarmac Rallying which also takes place over closed public roads. Now that I am living in the US the only time that I get to watch Tarmac Rallying is on the video tapes that my brother-in-law Rocky sends me several times a year. About 7 years ago Rocky (a keen fan of open wheel racing), asked me to get some memorabilia for him from the Long Beach Grand Prix. I had never been before but I agreed to go down to the "Beach" during Friday practice and get some items for him......I was hooked. Since then I have been a keen fan of Indy (now CART) racing and have attended the Grand Prix of Long Beach ever since...and also follow the rest of the series on television. See sidebar for some CART drivers that I photographed during the 1998 Long Beach GP.

1997 has seen the opening of the California Speedway, a state-of-the-art facility at Fontana (about sixty miles from where I live). This give me the opportunity to attend my first Nascar race, it was very exciting.....but not as exciting as the CART race at the end of September of that year, when speeds (during qualifying) reached 240 miles per hour. The opening of the speedway has given me the opportunity to attend three races in one year for the first time ever.

I also follow the Formula 1 racing series. Formula 1 was a little more exciting than usual during 1997 and in the latter half of 1998 as there has been some close racing and not the usual parade of cars. I still prefer CART racing, I think it is usually much more exciting to watch.

Occasionally I will watch other forms of motorsport but not with the same level of interest
